Previous remodel set the massive beam between the dining room and the kitchen. Nice thought but something must have gone wrong. The joists had sagged onto the beam, there should have been shims under the joists, I suspect the joists must have sagged while they were installing the beam, and they were lucky to get it in place at all. I've noticed this defect ever since we bought the house. The upstairs back bedroom floor really sloped off the outside wall noticeably. Jana claims I exaggerate. Anyway, I bought a 4 ton jack a while back waiting for just the right moment. A second jack from BrecherWrecker made a pair. With the room gutted, the time was right. With 4x4 posts located below in the basement to direct the load to the concrete, I managed to lift the joists much closer to where they should be, though not all the way. Several weeks into this, cracks started showing up in the bathroom and hallway, and Jana was not willing to let me push it any further. A lot of effort for 5/8 inch but it makes a huge difference upstairs. Green arrow points to new wood shims spacing the joists off the header.
